Benefits

Combustor Technology

Designed For Biomass Firing

The Wellons cell furnace system’s unique firing process maximizes efficiency through optimum combustion design. Gaseous emissions and particulates leaving the cell are kept to minimum levels.

The Wellons approach to lower emissions starts in the furnace. Preventative measures such as efficient combustion and precise control of the air and fuel in each cell often reduces the need for secondary air pollution control devices.

Wellons Cell

Combustion Principles

The Wellons Cell furnace is a refractory-lined cylindrical furnace that is a close-coupled gasifier for wet or dry woody biomass fuels. Fuel is continuously augered into the furnace at a controled rate to maintain a desired gross energy output. Small dry particles of fuel burn in suspension above the hearth, while heavier wet fuels form a bed of fuel that rests on the hearth to complete the combustion process. Heated combustion air is introduced in three (3) separately controlled zones.

Primary Air

Primary (undergrate) air, which can represent up to 30% of the total combustion air when burning wet fuels, is introduced under the hearth at low pressure to promote drying of the fuels, the gasification process, and burning of fixed carbon on the grates.

Secondary Air

Secondary air represents the remaining volume of combustion air required, and is introduced in controlled amounts in two (2) separate zones, Overfired Air and Top Overfire Air. Secondary air enters the cell tangentially through multiple staged air passages in the refractory walls, creating a cyclonic air flow for superior mixing of volatile gases and oxygen (combustion air), maximizing combustion of the volatile gases.

Turndown Ratio

Complete combustion is achieved through a wide range of operation from 100% capacity to as little as 20% of furnace capacity on clean fuels (5:1 turndown).

Water Cooled Grates

The only moving parts in the cell furnace are the water-cooled indexing, hydraulically operated rotary grates, so maintenance is minimal and connected horsepower is very low.

Fuel Feed & Metering

Fuel is continuously augured into the furnace at a controlled rate to maintain a desired gross energy output. Each cell has its own metering bin and fuel feed system allowing individual cell control optimizing performance.

Automatic Ash Removal

Each furnace cell has Wellons patented, automatic ash discharge rotary grates which discharge into a central ash collection conveyor. Wellons also provides a variety of ash containers and ash disposal systems.

Multiple Cell Configurations

The Wellons Cell Furnace offers broad flexibility in meeting a wide range of energy input requirements. Having the ability to cluster up to six cells under a boiler or fluid heater creates a zoned furnace system. Precise control of each cell allows better control of the combustion process. Multiple cell configurations provide significant turndown capability.

Combustor Cell

Applications

The Wellons Cell Furnace can be used in Steam, Thermal Oil, Hot Gas (Direct-Fired), and Power Generation (CHP & Electrical Power Generation) applications.
